Meowdoku is a grid-based logic puzzle about locating cats. Every row, every column, and every colored region must contain exactly one cat. A second rule changes everything: cats may not touch, even at a diagonal corner. These constraints overlap across the whole board, so one confirmed cat can eliminate several cells and reveal the next forced move.

Unlike a number puzzle, Meowdoku communicates through shape, color, and position. You read narrow regions, compare candidate cells, and watch how a decision affects nearby rows and columns. The interface lets you mark impossible cells with an X, undo freely, or ask for a logic hint when you want direction without losing the pleasure of finishing the deduction yourself.

How Meowdoku works: three simple rules.

New to Meowdoku? Read the board in this order: check each colored area, scan its rows and columns, then block every cell touching a confirmed cat. The pictures below show exactly what to cross out and why.

One cat per color

The colored cells form separate regions, even when a region bends around a corner. Every region must finish with exactly one cat: not zero, and never two. As soon as a region gets its cat, mark every other cell of that same color with an X.

Beginner tip: Start with the smallest or narrowest region. Fewer cells mean fewer possible hiding places.

One per row and column

Every horizontal row needs one cat, and every vertical column needs one cat. When you confirm a cat, the rest of its row and column become impossible immediately, even when those cells belong to another color.

Beginner tip: After every cat, scan straight left, right, up, and down and mark those cells before looking for the next move.

Cats never touch

A cat blocks all eight cells around it. That includes the four side neighbors and the four diagonal corners. Two cats may be in different colors and different rows and still be illegal if their corners touch.

Beginner tip: Draw an imaginary one-cell safety ring around each cat and mark every cell inside that ring with an X.

Left-click a cell to cycle from blank to X to cat, then back to blank. Right-click a valid cell to place a cat directly, or drag across blank cells to mark several Xs. X marks are safe, while an impossible cat is rejected and costs one heart.

When a board looks wide open, follow the same repeatable scan. It keeps your reasoning organized and makes hidden forced moves easier to notice.

    Scan the smallest colored regions

    Begin with regions that contain few cells or stretch across only one or two rows. Compare their candidates with cats already fixed on the board. A narrow region often has just one cell that survives the row, column, and no-touch rules, giving the Meowdoku solve a clean starting point.

    Mark every consequence immediately

    After confirming a cat, mark every other cell in its row and column, then mark all eight neighboring cells. Complete marking prevents you from reconsidering impossible positions later and makes new single-candidate rows, columns, and regions visible at a glance.

    Count candidates in three directions

    Do not scan only by row. Count the remaining choices for each row, each column, and each colored region. If any group has one possible cell left, that cell must contain a cat. Then apply its consequences and start the three-way scan again.

    Use contradictions as information

    A placement that removes every solution is rejected and costs a heart, so the board teaches you where the reasoning failed. Undo, inspect the earliest unsupported assumption, and continue from confirmed facts. Strong Meowdoku play is a chain of deductions, not a sequence of guesses.
